As a kid, Norah was a bit of a weirdo: gathering insects in her room. She was already very intrigued by nature. Probably also given the fact that her grandmother was the first female bioengineer that graduated at Ghent University in 1946 and her mother being a biologist. So it's in her DNA to be a bioscience engineer.

With the startup Carotein® Norah transforms air into food - protein powder, which could be added to different products. In the first place, for food processing companies, but also companies producing animal nutrition so they can mix it up in their products. It serves as a pigmentation and also a health product. It's very sustainable, because it's 100% natural.

The name Carotein® stands for carotenoids plus proteins, which are two biomolecules produced by her microorganisms and the carotenoids are a byproduct of them.

She won several (business) competitions yet, got funded 200k euro and is looking for more funding and smart money, aiming for 2025 to launch in the markets.

Together with the story behind her startup and PhD, Norah likes to share two lessons for other potential PhD entrepreneur
